New for the 2021 Equity & Diversity Conference Presented by Hilti, the Division of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access created an opportunity to provide a collaborative service project between all UNT departments and organizations with Be The Match.
For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell, a cure exists. Over the past 30 years, Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. They work every day to save lives through transplant.
While the registry is diverse, there remains a real health disparity where each patient does not have an equal chance of finding their life-saving match. There are simply not enough people registered within Black, African American, Asian, and Hispanic ethnic communities. We can change this through awareness.
When you support the Equity & Diversity conference 10% will go back to a UNT student, faculty or staff member, or North Texas searching patient.
A UNT research professor was one such searching patient. In November 2007, Rhonda Christensen was diagnosed with leukemia. After months of treatment, her doctor told her a marrow transplant was her only hope of surviving. At the time, there was a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a perfect match. Rhonda, a wife and mother of two boys, found her match with Elizabeth, a student, and a complete stranger. It was Elizabeth's blood that saved Rhonda's life. Two complete strangers, now great friends!
Please help us diversify the Be The Match registry! If you are 18-44, in general good health, and willing to donate to anyone in need: we need YOU! There are 3 ways you can join the registry:
If you know of, or if your life is being touched by a blood cancer such as leukemia and sickle cell, Be the Match invites you to share your story.
